We have been flooded!
The low-pressure storm called “Adam” hit the village of Els Poblets hard on 18 and 19 October. The River Girona burst its banks, and many roads and houses were flooded. We lost almost everything in our shop and warehouse; things were a little less severe at our cat shelter.
Torrential rain over the weekend led the authorities in the regions of Valencia and Alicante to issue the highest alert level. In some places, more than 700 litres per square metre were recorded. Unfortunately, we were not spared either: in the street Avenida Jaume, where our charity shop and warehouse are located, was flooded. The water in the shop was up to waist height, and we have had to dispose of everything we’d collected for sale – clothes, furniture and household goods. This is all the more painful as the proceeds from these sales go towards supporting the cats in the shelter, and our street colonies.
The shelter itself was also hit by the storm, but fortunately all the cats are unharmed. We are working flat out to make it cosy for them again as quickly as possible. The workload is enormous, as we have to clear up the shop at the same time. In this regard, we would like to thank the city council for providing rubbish skips, and to all the people for the donations of cleaning products and food – which not only makes the work easier but also provides financial support. We’d also like to thank all our hard-working volunteers, with whose help we’ve already achieved a great deal: mud has been shovelled out and damaged goods thrown away. We are receiving a lot of help from people who we never met before. Our hearts are not so heavy because of our new friends, supporting us during this difficult time. Thank you everyone!
We were hit hard once before, back in 2007. On that occasion too, we lost everything as a result of a storm. Now, the aftermath of Storm Adam is casting a shadow over Aldea Felina’s 25th anniversary this year. Nevertheless, we’re not letting this get us down, so that we can reopen the second-hand shop for our animals as soon as possible. For the time being, it remains closed.
Important: Please do not drop off any donations at the animal shelter or in the shop. Until we have cleaned and disinfected our premises, we cannot yet say when we will be able to reopen our doors.
